When a rash is formed on the body which usually occur in the region of the trunk and hands and legs due to a scabies infection it is known as scabies rash. Scabies is a result of a kind of mite, scientifically referred to as sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis entering the outer layer of the human skin by burrowing into it and feeding on blood. Check out these scabies rash pictures:
The rash The scabies rash appears as tiny pimple like sores all over the body but mostly in the limbs and in-between fingers, as you see in the images. The rash provokes the person infested with extreme urges to scratch and thus may even worsen the rash. This rash usually does not affect the region of the scalp. The rashes are usually red in color and in many cases they are seen to be followed or accompanied by rash caused due to other reasons like dermatitis or even hives of a smaller kind. A very dangerous form of scabies is called the Norwegian or crusted scabies. The mites in both the types are no different. The mites are always the same, as tiny as the size of the head of a pin and are nearly colorless. What then is the difference between the two? The answer is that while in the former in extreme conditions also the person is not infested at first with more than fifty mites, in the latter the presence of thousands and millions of mites are seen. In this case the rash may also spread to the scalp. This makes it all the more dangerous and all the more contagious. Nevertheless if another person acquires the mites from a person infested with crusted scabies rash it is not necessary that he will acquire the more dangerous form of the rash. Norwegian scabies rash occurs only in people with a very weak immune system. The mites (sarcoptes scabiei)When a person is infested with the scabies causing mites he or she will have about ten to fourteen number of adult mites with a maximum of not more than fifty. However the males die after mating while the females go on to live for about thirty to sixty days. During the lifespan of the female mites they lay an average of three eggs everyday which in turn take about a fortnight to mature into adults. It is to be remembered that these mites are not to be mistaken as insects. Instead they are arachnids and are relatives of creatures like scorpions and spiders. The scabies mite or sarcoptes scabiei do not have any support systems inside them to enable them to perform respiration. Instead since they reside under the outer layer of the human skin it is very comfortable for them to breathe through the pores of the human skin. When the mites are in the first stages of larvae they are completely microscopic. But as they grow, especially into adult females they are quite visible when seen at the end of their burrow having a jet like appearance. Spread of the rash amongst humans and mythsThe scabies rash does not occur in animals and thus it is only natural that they will not be transferred from animals also. This is because a particular type of mite survives only in its particular suited host and not on the physiological system of any other. Though mites of animals may cause occasional bites in human beings, they are not responsible for the scabies rash. This rash is usually incurred through contact which may be in many forms from a person already infested with it. Direst contact with infested individuals like shaking hands and sexual contact will cause the mite to spread. Even if a person uses clothing, bedding or seating arrangements like benches or sofas of the infested person the mites will naturally transfer. Since the scabies rash is so easily transferable from human to human it is mostly found in crowded areas. Thus if people living in places like slums or prisons have the scabies rash it is not because they are unhygienic nor because they live in dirty surroundings, but simply because the presence of so many possible hosts living so close to each other make it very easy for the infection to spread fast and to many. Not only is the scabies rash dangerous for its contagious qualities but also because it is extremely uncomfortable for people infested with it and thus immediate diagnosis and treatment is necessary. |
