The parasites that produce scabies are also called Sarcoptes scabiei. Parasitic mites rarely cause scabies to humans, as their most interest is in animals (dogs, cats, but even cows and horses). The direct human transmission is in 95% of cases caused by prolonged skin contact (with an accent on sexual interaction) with an infected person. Here are some images of scabies mites:
A big social problem are the scabies cases reported in health care institutions, particularly elderly institutions. A study estimated that several hundred homes for elderly have problems with this type of parasite. The incubation lasts from 1-6 weeks, depending on the severity of infestation, with an average of three weeks. The female mite digs tunnels in the stratum corneum of the skin and lays its eggs, which causes skin lesions characteristic to scabies symptoms. |
